Here's how to ensure that you are charting a positive course of action

The Organizational Performance Compass (OPC) is a simple tool I developed to help you find
your true bearings when the environment appears stormy.  What the Compass does is spur you
to ask the right questions, to direct responsibilities and accountabilities to the right place, and to
set a course of action that is designed to bring you positive outcomes.

EXPECTATIONS
What are the top expectations of the groups and individuals most important to you (clients,
customers, patients, students, etc.)?  What emotional factors are behind those expectations
(fear, pride, anger, hope, etc.)?  How realistic are the expectations of you, considering the level
of knowledge, resources, and commitment you have to meeting the expectations?

PERFORMANCE
Is your performance matching the expectations?  If so, how specifically?  If not, why not (lack of
resources, commitment, knowledge, benefit, etc.)?

ACCOUNTABILITY
How are you staying continually accountable to those who have expectations of you?  In other
words, is your performance associated with clear goals and objectives, with time lines and
specific actions, and is the performance measurable in some way?

COMMUNICATIONS
Is communications (both internally and externally) making it clear that your performance is
matching expectations?  If expectations are unrealistic, is your communications clearly showing
the importance of establishing new priorities, of dedicating more resources to the meeting of
expectations, and is the communications inclusive - meaning that you not only are sharing
information, but you are also actively engaged in getting input from others?
